Xalapa’s Local Music Scene

Xalapa, Veracruz is a place that pops up a lot in my posts as it happens to be my current hometown. Not only is it my present home, it is also an underestimated cultural hub in a state which is often bypassed by the throngs of tourists traversing Mexico every year.

Apart from artists, dancers and other performers, Xalapa, unknowingly to some, has a very lively music scene with local groups bringing their personal flavour to the table and becoming the new up and coming thing. So, with no further ado, here are three groups to watch out for if you are ever in the area.

Bantú Orchestra

This salsa orchestra has it’s base in the popular salsa spot ‘La Tentación’ and are quickly increasing in demand with gigs in other popular hangouts around the city and music videos in the making.

Los Aguas Aguas

Making música tranquila y tropical Los Aguas Aguas are possibly one of the most popular bands in the area bringing out a fusion of tropical beats with local flavour and constantly drawing in numerous fans to concerts some of which have been held in the large Xalapa arena. These guys are on the up and up recently hooking up gigs not only locally but nationally and internationally recently debuting their tranquil and tropical style in Costa Rica and Europe. It is one group that you simply cannot miss.

Maybe only little less popular and with a different mix of fusion going on, Sonex is, nonetheless, a creation of musical excellence. Fusion of a more traditional Veracruzano beat with various other musical rhythms, this group brings out the best of the local sounds. Also gaining local and national popularity their artistic ability is undoubtedly admirable and even if it is not your usual pick of music it is definitely worth checking them out as they give a great live performance.
