During the incredibly hot (but wonderful) days we get in Mexico at this time of year, every right minded Mexican and extranjero alike loves to escape the city and head to the beach or alberca (pool). Like yesterday, today was equally too hot to handle and since I didn’t have to work we decided to embark on our own escape mission to the albercas. Thanks to the lack of public pools in Xalapa and the beach being about and hour and a half away, our mission took us to the popular Pocitos de la Cumbre, some outdoor swimming pools about 20 minutes out of the city.
I have to admit that I love this place. It is cool, colourful, friendly and tropical. A well-known gem among locals and a hidden one among foreigners. On a sunny Saturday or Sunday this place is full of Mexican families who come to enjoy the sun, share grilled chicken (chicken culture is another story), sip on a cold chela (nickname for beer in Mexico) and watch the kids play with innumerable inflatable pool toys.
This is probably one of my favourite places to escape to around Xalapa – not surprising considering that I love sun and heat and everything that goes with it – it has a great atmosphere, is beautiful and I always feel relaxed and rejuvenated after a visit, however short it may be. All I can say is; I love pool culture.
